Asia 10-year RI to acid attacker
A local court today awarded 10-year Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to a 29-year-old construction worker who threw acid on 25-year-final year girl student after she rejected his proposal for marriage. Rasipuram Sub-court Magistrate M Gunasekaran, delivering the verdict in the two-year-old case, said it was a fit case for capital punishment but the court had to confine it to ten-year RI as it had no power to award life or capital punishment. Holding the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, the Magistrate directed the accused to pay a compensation of Rs five lakh to the victim, Seema, who was doing her final year in a local college. If the accused could not pay the compensation, the authorities should confiscate his properties and pay compensation to the girl who had lost vision in her right eye and suffered extensive burns on the right shoulder and arm, the Magistrate said. -- (UNI) -- 17MS51.xml
