Nepal approves $1.42 mn for Maoists' upkeep Kathmandu | November 27, 2006 6:15:06 PM IST
Nepal has sanctioned Rs. 100 million (about $1.42 million) for the management of the cantonments across the country that would house the Maoist militia of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN). According to Minister for Physical Planning and Works Gopal Man Shrestha, the government will provide the money to the CPN soon to implement the decision taken by the cabinet Monday in the wake of the peace accord signed between the government and the Maoist leadership last week. The CPN had demanded Rs.560 million (about $8 million) from the government to be used for the management of 'People's Liberation Army' (PLA) cantonments that is to be constructed in seven districts across the country, he said. --Xinhua (IANS)
